I am writing this review after having accumulated four - yes four - different complaints about the service, or lack thereof, my husband and I received at this State College Kay Jewelers location.

We went to the location, which is in the State College Mall, in mid-August to look for wedding rings. The sales lady looked at us as if we were not worthy of a greeting, maybe because we were wearing casual clothes and did not look like her ideal prospects. However, when she gathered that we were looking for two wedding rings, she did start giving us some options and, because we are not that picky, we selected our rings pretty quickly. We told her that we definitely wanted to buy those rings in September and even asked her about her work hours so we could make sure she would get the commission on them when we buy them.

In September, we returned to the store during her work hours as promised. When we were ready to pay for the rings, I wanted to write a check instead of agreeing to sign up for the store credit card, which she was pushing on us like crazy. She told me she could not accept my check because we had a welcome check-book without our address included (we had just moved to town and signed up for a new joint bank account). Instead of letting us fill-in our address as is customary in such a situation, she told us we should just sign up for the credit card and then pay it off right away. She even told us that this would really help her out because she needs to meet her quota of signing up one person a day. So we filled out the form for it and she informed us after running our info that they would only let us buy about half of the total price on credit. Since I did not want to buy the rings on credit in the first place, I told her "I'm sorry, we are just going to use our own card instead," so she would cancel the request. She agreed, visibly annoyed, and "allowed us" to pay for the rings upfront.

A few days later, my husband and I were very surprised to receive a Kay Jewelers credit card in the mail. She had signed us up for one although I clearly requested that she not, just to meet her quota. My husband called the Kay credit department and canceled the card, but it will still be on his credit report and we were never offered a fix for that.

I was mad at this point, but still not at the point where I was going to complain about her. However, it took more than two weeks until they finally called and told us our rings were in. We only had one of them resized and one engraved, so I was unsure what took so long. When my husband bought my engagement ring at a small jeweler in Milwaukee, it took three days to get it resized and have a half-bezel put in with a special diamond. I drove to the mall after work to pick up the rings, and the same lady was there. She was really unfriendly when I walked in, and, after checking the delivery for my ticket, informed me that only one ring was there. When I questioned why they had called us then since she had specifically said they wouldn't call until both rings were in, she told me they were on separate tickets and just kept justifying although she was clearly at fault. She eventually did apologize, in a disgruntled way, but then added once again that I should have asked if they were both in. Now, 2 weeks and 4 days after purchasing the rings,we only have one of them and I am not even excited at all to receive the second one because it will mean having to go in and seeing her again. When I left the mall, I was headed to a fun dinner with friends, but was in a bad mood because this woman has given me one of the worst customer service experience of my life after we were nice enough to plan our purchase around her work hours in order to ensure she makes a good commission.

So, just to sum up all the issues I had while making a simple ring purchase:

1) Discrimination from the sales lady based on looks and appearances (especially bad in a college town like ours)

2) Shameless pushing of store credit card and unauthorized issuance of one, which will have effects on our credit score

3) Unreasonably long wait time for a simple and uncomplicated order

4) Thoughtless calling to tell us the rings are there when really only one was there and then blaming me for not asking twice, although I was told directly that they would call us when both arrive and not before then

So, readers can make their own conclusions about this sales clerk, this store, and Kay Jewelers as a whole. I will never buy from them again and warn everyone who mentions them to stay away as well.

Monetary Loss: $2100.

They ruined my credit!!!

Anonymous, I agree with the majority of what you said except for the "soft hit". I thought the same until I actually called the credit department and in fact was told it was a hard hit inquiry. Have to be careful with the information we give out.

1) Once your info has been ran you have already signed the agreement to open a kay account. There is no way for them to determine a credit line without this occurring. It is then your responsibility to close the account.

2) It takes so long for re-sizing because kay uses repair shops located in Jared, The Galleria of Jewelery stores (owned by the same company that owns Kay, carrying most of the same merchandise), where the work is done by in-house trained professionals who specialize in working on Kay's own jewelery. The majority of the wait time is shipping, and since it is the #1 jewelry store in the nation there are obviously a lot of rings to re-size and engrave!

3) When rings come back from the repair shop they are all in a separate plastic bag, shipped along with jewelry with other customers. It is their policy to immediately call all the repairs that come in from the shop. The associate receiving the repairs that day may not have known that you had 2 rings, and was just trying to do their job.

4) Your credit score will not be affected, since Kay owns their own financing division. It does a "Soft hit" on your credit score, which means that half a point is withheld from your score for 6 months, then you get it back.
