Overall experience with sales people and Le Vian rep was poor. Took over a year to be able to exchange ring then had to spend additional money to replace defective ring that was originally purchased. Very poor customer service.

My fiance purchased a Le Vian Tanzanite and diamond ring valued at $3,800 for $3,000 from Kay Jewelers in December of 2014. He gave it to me in May 2015.

I wore the ring for a few weeks and noticed the Tanzanite was milky looking. We took it back to Kay's where he purchased it at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah. We spoke with the sales lady who sold it to him and she tried polishing it but didn't help. She said it was scuffed and wouldn't polish out.

She then stated that Tanzanite was a soft stone and not good for rings. So I've got a ring couldn't wear. She said most people put them away in a safe because Tanzanite is becoming rare and more valuable. We went to another Kay Jewelers at the oulet mall in Lehi, Utah and spoke with the manager.

He recommended we meet with the Le Vian rep when he comes to town at Fashion Place Mall in Murray, Utah in June 2016. I made appointment his name was Ted, wasn't very friendly and didn't act like he wanted to help us. He told Roy the sales rep to help us and that he would let us trade up for another Le Vian ring with a value of at least $1,000 more than the original price paid of $3,000 plus tax. I didn't really like most of what they had to offer but eventually settled on a blue sapphire and diamond ring.

Roy told me it was a Ceylon Blue Sapphire which was a higher quality. The sapphire is an emerald cut 1.15 cw and the diamonds are .44 total cw. Roy said the ring was valued at $7,047.50, which he gave us a 20% discount bringing the price of the ring to $5,638 plus tax. He did the exchange of the previous ring of $3,000 thus paying out of pocket an additional $2,818.70.

I decided to go online and look at similar rings and could only find larger cw sapphires and diamond rings for a lot less than what we paid. We got ripped off big time. Will never purchase from Kay Jewelers or Le Vian ever again.

I'm going to have ring appraised by a couple of other jewelers and then once I've got written proof of their scam job I will contact the BBB and possible legal action against them both. Buyer Beware!

Reason of review: Bad quality.

Kay Jewelers Pros: Several locations in salt lake valley.

Kay Jewelers Cons: Entire experience, Defective jewelry.

Location: Riverton, Utah

Tanzanite is an extremely soft gem. when worn in jeweler especially rings you should always take care with it as it is easily scratched.

As to being ripped off i highly doubt it. Levian is known to use unenhanced natural gems of high quaility.

1.15 ct emerald cut ceylon sapphire of good color and clairity a search of gem sellers shows to sell between $1500 and $8000 depending on hue color saturation and the like. To me it sounds like you got a pretty good deal considering it was your own ignorance in how to treat a gem like tanzanite that cuased the damage in the first place

First of all your comment is rude, you weren't at the store to see how we were treated. Secondly, I never claimed to be a geologist. And lastly, you're the one showing your ignorance by your remarks.

in no way is anything said insulting. fine quailty jewelery like Le Vian with over 500 years of jewelery making experiance, are OCCASTIONAL peices, not designed for everyday wear and tear.

Also as anyone who has ever owned high quality jewelery should be aware YOU need to take care of it. It is the responsability of the owner to care for fine jewels.

I do hope you wear your ceylon sapphire with pride as ceylon sapphires (sapphires from the island nation of sri lanka, formerly ceylon) are the most prized sapphires in the world. would love to see a picture of it assumung oyu dont damage it through negligence like your tanzanite
